Stabbing followed argument over TV

EDINBURGH, Scotland, Feb. 26 (UPI) -- A Muirhouse, Scotland, woman has pleaded guilty to stabbing her husband when he attempted to calm a dispute between her and her daughter over the TV.

Deborah Reid, 42, pleaded guilty Tuesday to culpably and recklessly brandishing a knife after she stabbed her husband, Thomas Reid, in the right shoulder with a kitchen knife in July while he was attempting to calm a heated argument between his wife and 18-year-old stepdaughter over what they should watch on TV, the Edinburgh Evening News reported Tuesday.

Prosecutor Siobhan Monks said Reid dropped the knife after the stabbing and fled from the house while her family locked the door behind her and phoned authorities.

Sheriff Nigel Morrison postponed sentencing in the case until background reports on the defendant can be obtained.

Movie for deaf has huge subtitle errors

RYDE, Australia, Feb. 26 (UPI) -- A special screening of the 2006 movie "The Queen" aimed at the deaf in Ryde, Australia, confused many on hand with occasionally nonsensical subtitles.

The free screening, organized by the local government and staged by Outdoor Movies Australia, left many baffled by the subtitles for the film -- which revolves around the aftermath of the death of Britain's Princess Diana, the Sydney Morning Herald reported Tuesday.

Mistaken lines included dialogue about former British Prime Minister Tony Blair's having been "educated at Fettes" being translated at the bottom of the screen as "educated the fattest." Additionally, "Did you vote?" became "Dead in a boat?" and "every newspaper proprietor has blood on his hands today" was printed as "every newspaper proprietor has blown in his hands today."

Ryde Council promotions officials would not say where the delinquent DVD came from, only that it was swapped at the last minute when a previous DVD was also found to have problems with its captioning.

Starbucks closes for training

SEATTLE, Feb. 26 (UPI) -- Seattle-based coffee giant Starbucks has begun closing its more than 7,000 U.S. locations for three hours of employee training.

The company said the nationwide closure -- which begins at 5:30 p.m. local time and lasts until 8:30 -- is due to "espresso excellence training" for its employees, the New York Post reported Tuesday.

"We will close all of our U.S. company-operated stores to teach, educate and share our love of coffee and the art of espresso," Howard Schultz, chief executive of Starbucks, said on the company's Web site.

However, news of the temporarily lapse in espresso service did not go down smooth for regular coffee drinkers in New York's Manhattan borough, which is home to 158 Starbucks locations.

"What am I supposed to do, make it myself?" said New York University student Mallory Drew, 18. "I am shocked. Shocked and appalled."

Borough of Manhattan Community College student Alba Morales, 22, predicted the closure would lead to decaffeinated confusion.

"A lot of people come here to make out, read, sleep. I can't imagine how lost people will be tomorrow," Morales said Monday.

Tennis club bans girl for grunt

MELBOURNE, Feb. 26 (UPI) -- A Sunbury, Australia, tennis club has told a 9-year-old girl she cannot play unless she remains silent on the court, the girl's parents said.

Duncan and Ruth Edwards said their daughter, Lauryn, was banned from the Mount Carmel Tennis Club because of the loudness of her grunts when she strikes the ball, the Melbourne Sun-Herald reported Tuesday.

"They told me to guarantee she won't grunt or she can't play," Duncan Edwards said.

He said he was outraged by the club's behavior and he has contacted authorities with Tennis

Australia and Tennis Victoria to help remedy the situation.

"It's pretty slight and now and again she hits it hard and makes a loud noise and that's it," he said. "From just one comment, this has all blown up stupidly. There's no rule against it, so they've made a rule against it."
