Trump crest fails to pass in Scotland

EDINBURGH, Scotland, Feb. 16 (UPI) -- Donald Trump has had another run-in with Scottish authorities, an order from the Court of the Lord Lyon that his company must stop using a coat of arms.

The Trump Organization has been putting the crest on its stationery and on promotional items for Trump's proposed luxury golf resort near Aberdeen. That practice violates a 1672 law giving the Court of the Lord Lyon the authority to rule on coats of arms in Scotland, The Scotsman reported.

George Sorial, a Trump aide, said the company has begun the process of getting an approved crest.

"This is something we have great respect for -- the history of the coat of arms -- and we are willing to go through this," he said.

Trump is notorious in the United States for putting his name on buildings and other things. Romilly Squire of the Scottish Heraldic Society said having Trump's name in the crest breaks a key law of heraldry -- it should be a motto.

Trump's planned development is controversial in Scotland. Many officials and people want the jobs, but a vocal minority fears environmental damage and says the resort will be out of scale for the area.
