GREEN BAY, Wis., Feb. 16 (UPI) -- Presidential hopeful Barack Obama openly supported the Chicago Bears during a speech at the University of Wisconsin in Green Bay, a report said.
Shortly after the Illinois senator stepped on stage at the Kress Center arena Friday, he joked about the Bears and Green Bay Packers football teams, the Chicago Tribune said -- after noting the presence in the crowd of Packers linebacker Brady Poppinga, who supports Obama for president.
"It is hard for a Packer to support a Bears fan," Barack said -- drawing boos from the crowd.
"But you would not want some guy to come up here and say he was a Packers fan, when he's a Bears fan ... . You gotta stick with your team, even when they don't break .500, even when they don't make the playoffs, even when they make you tear your hair out."
The Bears went from a Super Bowl team in the 2006 NFL season to a 7-9 record -- and no playoff appearance -- in 2007. The Packers reached the NFC title game in 2007, losing 20-23 to the New York Giants -- who went on to win the Super Bowl in February.
