Super Bowl ads a hit on MySpace
PHOENIX, Feb. 5 (UPI) -- A lot of people watched Super Bowl XLII on TV Sunday but a sizable number -- 23 million and counting -- surfed the Internet to see the Super Bowl commercials.
That's the number MySpace.com said Monday had clicked on the Web site to take a look at more than 60 commercials that ran during the NFL Championship game between the New York Giants and New England Patriots. Of those millions, more than 4,600 posted comments about their favorite and not so favorite ads, MySpace officials said.
Those millions of visitors spent an average of just over 10 minutes at the site.
While the commercials have proven popular, the big game itself is still a bigger draw, averaging 97.5 million viewers throughout the telecast with a total audience of 148.3 million.
Poll: Some Canadians want to vote in U.S.
TORONTO, Feb. 4 (UPI) -- Fifteen percent of Canadians would rather vote in the U.S. election, a new poll indicated.
The Canadian Broadcasting Corp. said Monday its survey found that 15 percent of those queried said they would trade in their Canadian ballot for one for the upcoming presidential election south of the border.
A spokesman for the polling company, Environics, told CBCNews.com the response mirrors a realization that what happens in the United States often has a ripple effect in Canada.
"What they're saying is that in the whole scheme of things, the race will have impact on the world and Canada," said Environics Vice President Keith Neuman. "The United States is a big global superpower and it carries a lot of weight."
More than half the 2,001 Canadians surveyed by Environics on behalf of the CBC said they didn't really care personally who won the elections, but 46 percent said that it mattered to Canada.
Orangutan paintings draw eBay interest
SEATTLE, Feb. 4 (UPI) -- Seattle's Woodland Park Zoo is using eBay to sell paintings made by a rare artist -- a 39-year-old orangutan.
One painting created by the zoo's male primate, Towan, had reached $410 on the auction site with 12 bids as of 7 p.m. eastern time Monday. A second piece had reached $350 with 14 bids.
"Own a true original! Woodland Park Zoo's orangutan, 39-year-old male Towan, has created a beautiful painting, rendered in his own hand," the zoo's description of the painting on eBay reads.
The art works, created with acrylic paints, have been matted in black frames and come with a photograph of the orangutan artist at work.
Funds raised by the auctions will go toward the 2009 conference of the Third Annual International Congress of Zookeepers/36th American Association of Zookeepers National Conference, the first joint conference featuring both organizations.
Scantily-clad mayor argues her case
ARLINGTON, Ore., Feb. 4 (UPI) -- Arlington, Ore., Mayor Carmen Kontur-Gronquist assured media that a risque photo of her is not the reason some constituents are seeking her removal from office.
The mayor claims that those seeking her removal are just using a photo of her in a brassiere with no blouse on so they can have their way on things like finances, water woes and weeds on golf course fairways go their own way, The (Portland) Oregonian reported Monday.
"To the media, to the outside public, it's about the photos," Kontur-Gronquist said. "But within this community, it's truly about inner politics."
She did admit that the photo, which was widely viewed on her MySpace.com page until she blocked access to all but her friends, made some officials angry and embarrassed others.
