Va. lottery loses on 4-zero Pick 4

RICHMOND, Va., Jan. 25 (UPI) -- Four zeros in the "Pick-4" is proving costly for the Virginia Lottery, which had to pay off 650 winners.

That's because a lot of ticket buyers like combinations with four of the same number, the Newport News Daily Press reported.

While $280,000 in tickets were sold for Thursday night's drawing, the lottery paid out $3.27 million to about 650 people who selected the four-zero combination, spokesman John Hagerty said.

The 0

0-0 was picked for the first time since the Virginia Lottery began in 1991. The last winning combination of a single digit was four ones on Jan. 15, 2007.

The odds of any individual combination coming up are exactly the same, a steep one in 10,000.
