OSLO, Norway, Jan. 19 (UPI) -- The attorney of an Oslo, Norway, "cave man" told reporters his client was relieved and satisfied after a court ruled he does not have to wash.

Workers at the nursing home in Oslo where the 54-year-old man lives said his foul odor and resistance to bathing have caused a health threat to people around him, Aftenposten reported Saturday.

"He has waited a long time, and can now finally decide over his own body," attorney Nils Nordhus said about his client.

The man filed suit against the city after he objected to required washings at the nursing home.

He is said to be in need of medical treatment after years of poor hygiene, which included residing in a mound of trash following his dismissal from student dorms at the University of Oslo in the 1970s.

The formerly homeless man is reportedly still living with open wounds on his appendages at the nursing home.
