DRESDEN, Germany, Jan. 15 (UPI) -- Ten protesters who lived in a 200-year-old beech tree for more than a month were brought down early Tuesday by police in Dresden, Germany.

The members of a group called Robin Wood attached themselves to the tree 60 feet up on Dec. 12 to prevent it from being cut down to make way for a new bridge over the Elbe River, Deutsche Welle reported.

The group alleges apart from the tree's loss, the bridge will put Dresden at risk of losing its World Heritage Site status.

A throng of fellow protesters jeered police during the eviction, but the only people taken into custody were the 10 in the tree, the report said.

Soon after, the tree was cut down, Spiegel Online reported.
