SYDNEY, Dec. 30 (UPI) -- A pair of newlyweds became unwilling street racers in Sydney this weekend thanks to a chauffeur with a very heavy foot, police have alleged.

Police said the newly married couple's chauffeur allegedly tried to outrace another motorist on the way to their wedding reception, causing police to immediately intervene, the Australian Broadcasting Corp. reported Sunday.

John Tauranga said that until police finally stopped the limousine carrying him and his new wife, Laina, they were in fear for their lives.

"Me and her were like, kissing, but ... by then, the cops had already pulled us up," he said of Saturday's impromptu street race.

"Yeah, we had a bit of fear. I was thinking about her more, thinking about our lives together. We've just started a new life together and we don't want to die at this age."

The broadcaster said that both the couple's chauffeur and the other driver now face charges for their part in the alleged race.
