The largest share of the first-prize ticket series was purchased by residents of the Spanish town of Nava, but citizens in the country's larger cities also took part in the annual drawing.

Each 10th of a ticket costs $29 and an estimated 75 percent of Spanish citizens were said to have taken part in this year's drawing.

The BBC said that as a whole, Spain spent $4.1 billion on the Christmas drawing this year alone.

The Fat One is thought to be tops among all of the world's lotteries and drawings in terms of total amount paid out.
