BONDI BEACH, Australia, Dec. 20 (UPI) -- A reported shark attack in Australia has been exposed as a hoax after it was revealed that the alleged victim's injuries came from a plate glass window.

The Web site of the Sydney Morning Herald said Scott Wright, who claimed to have been attacked by a shark Friday night at Bondi Beach, was actually injured days before the alleged attack by an encounter with a plate glass window.

There has not been a shark attack against swimmers at the tourist spot in 70 years.

Wright was arrested on car theft and robbery charges after he allegedly broke into a Bondi backpackers' hostel Monday night and Tuesday. He is due in court Feb. 18.
