NEW YORK, Dec. 12 (UPI) -- A U.S. news Web site has compiled a list of benefits of regular sex, including weight loss, disease fighting and headache relief.
The list, compiled by Newsweek.com, cites research from a variety of sources that claim to have found positive effects of frequent sex, The Chicago Sun-Times reported Wednesday.
Research performed at Wilkes University in Pennsylvania suggests sexual intercourse once or twice a week increases the body's level of immunoglobulin A, an antibody that boosts the immune system and helps fight off cold and flu viruses.
Endorphins and corticosteroids released during arousal and orgasm can serve as an analgesic for women to help relieve headache pain.
The list also claimed weight loss as a potential benefit of sex, as about four calories are burned per minute during the act.
A Royal Edinburgh Hospital study in Scotland found that study participants who experience sex four times a week were judged to look seven to 12 years younger than their ages when viewed through a one-way mirror.
