While fuel costs throughout the troubled region continue to rise, simpler transport options such as donkeys have become highly sought-after goods, The Independent reported Saturday.
With Hamas in control of the Gaza Strip and Israel limiting imports into the region, the cost of a good donkey has increased by up to 60 percent.
Saber Dabour, a 25-year-old man who recently purchased one of the animals in the city of Gaza, offered potential donkey buyers a tip or two on what to look for.
"You need to make sure that it doesn't kick people with its back legs, that it's strong and that the color of the coat is all right," he told the British newspaper.
