WREXHAM, Wales, Dec. 5 (UPI) -- A court in Wales has suspended the driving license of one of Britain's most senior traffic officers for driving 90 mph in a 60 mph zone.

Magistrates in Wrexham, in northern Wales, ordered a 42-day suspension and fines for Meredydd Hughes, chief constable of South Yorkshire police, The Guardian reported.

Hughes is also the outgoing chairman of highway policing at the Association of Chief Police Officers.

The court heard Hughes and his family were on a short vacation in Wales from northern England May 28 when their car was clocked at 90 mph on the A5 highway.

Hughes didn't attend the hearing, but his lawyer, Huw Edwards, forwarded a message to the magistrates.

"He doesn't seek to make any excuse about this matter ... He accepts that he must be punished for the offense," the lawyer said. "He asks me to apologize for the offense. He recognizes that the matter is a serious matter."

Hughes was also fined $600, ordered to pay $70 for court costs and a $30 victim surcharge, the report said.
