Marketing fake licenses 'Superbad' idea

HONOLULU, Dec. 5 (UPI) -- A Sony Pictures movie marketing gimmick of giving away fake Hawaii drivers licenses with DVDs isn't sitting well with officials in Honolulu.

In the movie "Superbad," released on DVD Tuesday, a teenager tries to buy alcohol using a phony Hawaii drivers license.

Honolulu officials say the promotional item could be mistaken for the real thing at first glance, although it carries a hologram image of two of the movie's stars, Honolulu's KITV-TV reported.

"The textures are different ... a lot of our security devices are not on here, but it's close enough and where it might encourage people to do things that are not permissible by law," said Honolulu City Information Services Director Jeff Coelho.

He said marketers didn't contact anyone in Hawaii before printing up the giveaways, and that it would have been better to stamp them clearly with "For entertainment only," the report said.

Coelho said the city has alerted the Honolulu Police Department, the state Liquor Commission and the federal Transportation Security Administration about the matter.
