BERLIN, Dec. 5 (UPI) -- Fans from as far away as Japan, Venezuela and Connecticut celebrated the first birthday Wednesday of the Berlin Zoo's polar bear cub.

Knut has been the Berlin Zoo's star since his arrival last year, soon after his birth to a performing bear named Tosca, who rejected him. He was hand-raised at the zoo.

"I arrived in Berlin yesterday and went straight to the zoo," Jasmin Sambrano of Caracas told Spiegel Online. "Seeing him for the first time was like a meditative experience because there weren't many people here and everyone was so quiet. When I saw him, I just started crying."

The Internet and Knut blogs helped make the bear an international star. Sambrano and others wore scarves that said "December 5, Two thousand and Knut."

Knut's birthday treat was a cake that was an all-in-one meal -- with fruit and vegetables, ice cream and a fish. After eating some of the greens, the animal turned over the cake and went straight for the ice cream.

A children's choir sang "Happy Birthday."
