ORLAND PARK, Ill., Nov. 28 (UPI) -- The mother of a bride whose wedding reception in Orland Park, Ill., was host to a fight between a cop and up to 18 guests is suing the officer.

Pamela Schultz is seeking more than $50,000 in damages from officer Pete Diangi, who she claims provoked the fight with the groom, Andrew Terrell, his brother, George, cousin, Jason, and several others, the Chicago Daily Southtown reported Wednesday.

Diangi, who was off-duty and working undercover as security during the wedding, testified at the aggravated battery of a police officer trial of Terrell and his relatives a group of up to 20 men attacked him at the March 20, 2006, wedding. He said he feared for his life during the incident.

However, Andrew, George and Jason Terrell claim Diangi provoked the confrontation by throwing the first punch and indiscriminately using his pepper spray.

Diangi's version of events has been backed by bartenders Derek Slebicka, Chris Orsic, Brad Grey and Tony Villapiano.

Andrew Terrell's marriage to Pamela Schultz's daughter has since been annulled.
