No diapers, no problem

MINNEAPOLIS, Nov. 25 (UPI) -- Babies too young to walk or pull down their pants can be potty trained, a growing number of parents say.

Parents who listen to their babies' cues -- also known as "elimination communication" -- can avoid diapers virtually from birth by training their infants to indicate they need the potty through sign language or other cues -- or so say several books and 2,500 people who have joined Internet chat rooms devoted to the subject, The Minneapolis (Minn.) Pioneer Press reported Sunday.

A recent article in the Journal of Pediatrics found half the world's babies are toilet trained by age 1.

The approach is more environmentally responsible because it reduces the use of diapers, and is better for babies who do not have to sit around in wet or soiled diapers, the method's proponents say.

Enthusiasm for the method has sparked a cottage industry in tiny toilets and underwear.

Other parents, however, say going diaperless requires a lot more work for already overtaxed parents, and even the method's strongest advocates admit they cannot catch every poop and pee.
