WELLINGTON, New Zealand, Nov. 17 (UPI) -- Immigration officials in New Zealand have told a British woman she's too fat to join her husband, who was recruited Down Under for his job skills.
Richie Trezise, 35, now living in Wales, says he will abandon his plan to work in New Zealand if his wife Rowan doesn't lose enough weight to join him by Christmas, reported The Telegraph.
Trezise had to lose weight to gain entry to New Zealand after being rejected for having a Body Mass Index, or BMI, of 42. Anything over 30 is regarded as obese and now his wife has failed the obesity test, the British newspaper reported.
Trezise was recruited to New Zealand because he is one of only four people qualified to supervise the Southern Cross Cable linking New Zealand with Australia and the United States, the Telegraph reported.
The New Zealand Immigration Service said it rejects obese immigration applicants because they would strain the country's healthcare system.
