KANSAS CITY, Mo., Nov. 14 (UPI) -- A Kansas City man has been charged with possession of a Colorado River toad with intent to use its venom to get high.
KMBC-TV reports that David Theiss was released on bail after his arrest. The 21-year-old is believed to be the first in the Kansas City area to be charged with toad-licking.
Colorado River toads have glands that release venom strong enough to kill small animals. Few pet stores sell them because the venom can kill pets.
The venom also contains hallucinogenic chemicals and licking them can produce a high.
"People used to do it all the time, but it got faded out awhile, but came back as a fad," Danny Snyder, an animal expert, told the television station. "Not a smart one -- the toxins in it can kill a lot of stuff."
