ROME, Nov. 14 (UPI) -- Cat lovers in Italy are trying to change the image of black cats, long considered a symbol of bad luck and worse, by giving them a special day of their own.
The Italian Association in Defense of Animals and the Environment has set Saturday as the nation's first Black Cat Day, ANSA reported Tuesday. The group is encouraging owners of black cats to bring their pets to Rome and Milan for outdoor picnics where awards will be handed out to those who have worked to keep the felines safe.
Association President Lorenzo Croce told the Italian news agency the goal is to fight superstition and reshape the black cat's image.
''Black cats are those most targeted by the superstitious, as well as delinquents, who delight in killing them,'' said Croce. ''Our statistics suggest that at least 60,000 black cats vanish each year, kidnapped, abandoned or killed in esoteric or satanic rituals."
