BEIJING, Nov. 3 (UPI) -- Reports that pigs were being pampered prior to be eaten at the Games of the XXIX Olympiad have been denied by an Olympic committee in China.
A recent report from the Beijing Organizing Committee said that pigs being bred for meat had not been living a life of luxury as alleged by the Olympic Games' sole pork supplier, China Daily reported Saturday.
Luck Crane chairman Yang Yanyun had alleged that his company's pigs have been immunized daily and being cared for in special breeding centers in preparation for the Olympic Games.
The head of the pork supplying group also alleged that just like actual Olympic participants, the pigs had been exercising daily to prepare for the event.
While the Beijing group did admit this week that new breeding methods may have been developed by such companies, no animal pampering was done at their request.
"There is no need to raise 'Olympic pigs' for the Games, as currently 97 percent of the branded pork products in Beijing meet the food safety standard," the BOCOG report said.
