NEW YORK, Oct. 17 (UPI) -- Four decades after U.S. comedian Pat Paulson ran for president, Comedy Central satirist Stephen Colbert is launching his own bid for the White House.
Colbert, who artfully mocks bombastic, right-wing political pundits on "The Colbert Report" on Comedy Central, announced his favorite-son candidacy on his own show Tuesday night, The Washington Post reported.
Colbert was born in South Carolina, but hasn't lived in the state for years. He plans to run as a favorite son there.
In a "world-exclusive" interview, he said he had no plans to give up his show. "Do you think I'm a fool?" he asked. "Now that I'm a candidate, you people are going to be gunning for me, like you do for everybody."
Colbert plans to file papers to run in both Democratic and Republican primaries, the Post said.
Paulson, an Emmy-winning comedian known for deadpan double-talk on The Smothers Brothers television shows, ran hilarious campaigns in 1968, 1972, 1980, 1988, 1992, and 1996.
He died in 1997.
