WARSAW, Poland, Oct. 16 (UPI) -- An image resembling the late Pope John Paul II photographed in a southern Poland bonfire is being hailed as his appearance from beyond the grave.

Referring to the reported appearance in the flames of John Paul in his native Poland, a Polish bishop said the pope made many pilgrimages during his life and he was still making them in death, Britain’s Telegraph said Tuesday.

Polish cameraman Gregorz Lukasic photographed the image during a memorial service April 2 at Beskid Zywiecki, close to John Paul’s birthplace of Wadowice in southern Poland.

Lukasik said he realized the flames had formed the image of the pope only after he returned home and looked at the pictures, The Telegraph said.

Italian television stations and a religious Web site have been displaying the photograph.
