Man sleeps as police steer his vehicle

ST. LOUIS PARK, Minn., Oct. 12 (UPI) -- A Minnesota man fell asleep at the wheel and stayed asleep all the while as police managed to steer him to a safe stop before arresting him for drunk driving.

Police in the Minneapolis suburb of St. Louis Park said Pedro Brito, 26, apparently fell asleep while driving down a street early Sunday morning, The Star Tribune reported. Officials caught up with slow-moving vehicle as it drifted into the wrong lane, stepped onto its running board and grabbed the wheel to steer it back into the right lane.

Brito slept.

An officer then shifted the truck from drive to neutral to guide it to a stop, and then removed the key, the complaint said.

Brito slept.

Officers shook him and yelled at him.

Brito woke up.

That's when police charged Brito with drunken driving, refusing a sobriety test and driving with a suspended license, the Hennepin County Attorney's Office said.

Cat sets fire; dog rescues owner

GREENVILLE, Maine, Oct. 12 (UPI) -- A Maine resident's guardian angel is a black Lab, whom the man credits with saving his life as a fire destroyed his home.

Roland Cote, 56, of Greenville, said when Thumper woke him from "a sound sleep," he saw flames and had scant time to run downstairs, dial 911 and give the emergency operator the necessary information before the house became engulfed, The Bangor (Maine) Daily News reported.

The irony? The fire apparently was caused by a kerosene lantern that the family cat apparently tipped. The lantern melted the rubber gas line to the refrigerator and the fire spread, he said.

Pizza-maker charged in illegal dough case

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y., Oct. 12 (UPI) -- A pizzeria owner in New York has been accused of making the wrong kind of dough -- fake $50 bills to be exact -- in the offices of his businesses.

Frank Donato, 39, of Dobbs Ferry, faces felony charges on accusations of forging the funny money in the offices of his businesses, The Brick Oven Pizza Shop and Frankie's Homemade Ice Cream next door, The Journal News in White Plains, N.Y., reported Thursday.

Donato was arrested Tuesday after a three-month undercover operation by federal and local law enforcement authorities, police said.

News of the arrest took village residents aback, with several telling the newspaper they couldn't believe the pizza-maker would be involved in a backroom counterfeiting scheme.

"He was always there, behind the counter," said Dobbs Ferry native Christina Campana. "In a small town like this, it's especially shocking because you know the person."

Donato was charged with 16 felony counts of first-degree forgery and may face further charges, officials said.

Burglar's found ID narrows suspect list

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla., Oct. 12 (UPI) -- It looks like an easy case for Florida detectives who found a suspect’s identification inside a car that had been broken into.

Nothing was missing from the car that was parked at a Fort Lauderdale hotel Thursday; however a search turned up the ID belonging to one of the three suspected burglars.

The Miami Herald said the caper involved three suspects who allegedly broke into the car but were spotted by a patrol car as they fled the scene. The officer was able to arrest two of men but a third ran away after apparently losing his ID while rummaging through the vehicle.

"It obviously narrows down the suspects," Police Sgt. Frank Sousa told The South Florida Sentinel. "Now it's a matter of following through the investigation and bringing in the suspect for questioning."
