Senators want to revive reservations perk

WASHINGTON, Oct. 1 (UPI) -- Two U.S. senators have begun a bipartisan effort to revive a useful perk for legislators -- making multiple reservations out of Washington without cost.

Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., and Robert Bennett, R-Utah, have asked the Senate Ethics Committee to rule the perk does not violate the new ethics law, ABC News reported. The Airline Transport Association announced two weeks ago the law only allows airlines to do for legislators what they would do for frequent fliers.

Members of the House and Senate say being able to make several reservations while only paying for the one they actually use is essential because congressional schedules can go awry, especially at the end of a session. Even many reformers say the accommodation is a good thing.

"Quite frankly, it sounds like lobbyists for the ATA are trying to ridicule the new ethics rules," said Craig Holman, who is with the watchdog group Public Citizen.
