Feathered squatter wearing out welcome

GILMERTON, Scotland, Sept. 14 (UPI) -- A stray peacock has taken up residence in a Scottish community, growing so bold he pecks on a shop window daily until the staff comes out to feed him.

Mostly, the brightly colored bird spent the summer strutting around the Candlemaker's Park neighborhood of Gilmerton, an Edinburgh suburb, enjoying his celebrity status, The Scotsman reported.

"He comes up to the window and taps with his beak, asking us to come out and feed him," shop employee Adam Mohammed told The Scotsman. "He is very friendly, although he won't eat out of the hand yet."

The peacock may have wandered over from the grounds of Prestonfield House Hotel but efforts by animal protection officers to catch him have failed, the newspaper said.

"At first it was a novelty," said Bil Riley, chef at the Abbey Lodge Hotel, "but I think some people are getting tired of him because he eats their flowers."

At least he doesn't squawk any longer since the mating season ended, Mohammed said.

Fight over product placement turns violent

ORANGE, Calif., Sept. 14 (UPI) -- Two California grocery store workers took an argument about how to stock produce outside, and the dispute turned violent when one worker stabbed another.

Two men were stacking produce when they began arguing about the right -- or wrong -- way to do their job, The Orange County (Calif.) Register reported.

Words escalated into threats and the men took their argument to the parking lot, where punches were thrown and Abraham Marquez, 24, allegedly pulled a steak knife and stabbed his co-worker in the arm, said Orange Police Sgt. Dan Adams. Someone driving by saw the fight and called police.

Marquez fled, but was arrested at his home a few blocks away. He was charged with suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon.

The other man was treated at the scene by paramedics, police said.

Misprint incorrectly raised lottery hopes

GALLATIN, Tenn., Sept. 14 (UPI) -- A misprint on Lotto 5, Cash 3 and Cash 4 tickets had at least one Powerball player in Tennessee expecting a chance at an additional $14 million.

James Hawkins of Gallatin, Tenn., discovered that the possible jackpot listed on his lottery tickets for a recent drawing was actually $14 million off the actual total, prompting him to demand a refund, The Nashville Tennessean reported.

Hawkins told lottery officials that due to the incorrectly inflated jackpot listed on his Lotto 5 ticket, he purchased several additional tickets for last Wednesday's drawing.

But when he learned the total was a mere $15 million, he said he felt he had been tricked into buying more tickets than he normally would have.

"I don't think it's a situation where they intentionally overstated it to get more sales," Hawkins told the Tennessean. "But it's just once again sloppiness in management of their numbers."

Guards caught with anti-theft bait

RANCHO CORDOVA, Calif., Sept. 14 (UPI) -- Rancho Cordova, Calif., police didn't have far to go to track thieves who took a rigged video game from a transit station, they were in a nearby guards' room.

As part of the force's anti-theft campaign, police installed electronic surveillance equipment in the game console and planted it in the back seat of a car in the parking lot of a light-rail station, The Sacramento Bee reported. When the game was taken it beep-beeped to the small building used by the transit station's security guards.

Police Detective Sgt. Pete James said officers confronted the two guards on duty at the station and found the game console hidden inside a trash bag stowed in a file cabinet. The guards admitted to breaking into the vehicle and stealing the game system, he said.

Both were taken in custody on felony charges related to the theft and break-in.
