Poltergeist scares family from home

CARLISLE, England, Sept. 12 (UPI) -- A British family fled their home after experiencing what the mom said was a night of horror she blames on a poltergeist.

Allison Marshall, 27, took her four children out of their home in Carlisle after seeing what she said were several spooky and violent incidents, the Daily Mail reported Wednesday. The family is staying at Marshall's mother's home nearby.

Eerie events included objects being tossed about the living room, creepy noises heard during the night, sudden drops in temperature and the image of a skull in a display cabinet.

Marshall said the problems started on Aug. 30. She said she became so concerned that she contacted a clairvoyant, who visited the house last weekend, the British newspaper said.

"I don't know if I can go back there because I still feel scared," Marshall said. "I've lived in that house for four years and always been happy."

Man kills 'dangerous' pig

HONOLULU, Sept. 12 (UPI) -- Porky was certainly a big pig but whether he was dangerous and deserved to die will be a matter for the courts in Hawaii to decide.

Joseph Calarudda is charged with felony theft of livestock after stabbing the 300-pound porcine TV show veteran to death, WITV-TV in Honolulu reported Wednesday. Part of Calarudda's defense may be that Porky was aggressive and dangerous, the station said.

Calarudda, who was expected to go to trial this week, allegedly killed the pig -- which appeared in the ABC television series "Lost" -- as its owners begged him to stop. Prosecutors said they intend to use video of Porky in a TV commercial to demonstrate how amicable he was around humans.

Man bags replacing briefcases in Sweden

STOCKHOLM, Sweden, Sept. 12 (UPI) -- Style-conscious men in Sweden, it seems, are ditching their briefcases in favor of man bags.

While sales figures are unavailable, store owners and distributors say the bags for men are selling at a fast clip, The Local reported.

Bjorn Borg Bags said it doubled its sales of gentlemen's bags over the last year.

"We can see that bags as accessories are becoming part of men's fashion," spokeswoman Alexandra Adler said.

From boutiques to department stores, man bags are filling the shelves, the newspaper said.

"There used to be a lot of briefcases for men who need to carry folders or laptops, but now there are more shoulder bags," said Niko Jarvikari of the department store Nordiska Kompaniet. "These are maybe intended not so much for work but for everyday use."

Unkindest cut comes from behind

BLOOMINGTON, Ind., Sept. 12 (UPI) -- An Indiana man was behind bars after allegedly slicing a woman's buttocks with a sword during an argument about a puppy.

The 18-year-old woman told Bloomington police she was at Ashunti Taylor's home Monday to see the puppy when the 26-year-old man became agitated about items the dog had chewed, WLKY-TV in Louisville, Ky., reported. When she threatened to leave with the animal, Taylor allegedly struck her with a samurai-style sword, the station said.

The woman was treated at a hospital for an 8- to 9-inch cut and Taylor was sitting in the Monroe County jail until he could post a $10,000 bond.

The puppy wasn't hurt, police said.
