LOS ANGELES, Aug. 28 (UPI) -- The longest bus in the United States has taken to the roads in Los Angeles.
The 65-foot passenger coach is undergoing a pilot run for the next year using a special permit because it is considered too long to legally operate on L.A. city streets.
The bus can carry up to 100 passengers and will tackle the heavily traveled Orange Line in the San Fernando Valley. It also runs on clean-burning compressed natural gas, the Los Angeles Daily news said Tuesday.
Although riding with 99 other people might sound a bit claustrophobic, the big bus is considered the better of two evils. "It's a testament to how Valley residents need alternatives to the 405 and 101 freeways," said Rep. Brad Sherman, D-Calif., who represents the Valley in Congress.
