HACKENSACK, N.J., Aug. 28 (UPI) -- A teenaged New Jersey hacker says he has traded "the world's second unlocked iPhone" for a Nissan 350Z sports car.
George Hotz, 17, rose to prominence when he apparently became the first hacker to achieve a full hardware unlock of Apple's iPhone, allowing the device to be used by wireless providers other than AT&T, Conde Nast Portofolio.com reported Tuesday.
He said he traded his second creation -- the first is for his own use -- to cell phone refurbisher Terry Daidone, founder of Certicell, in exchange for the sports car.
"Some of my friends think I wasted my summer, but I think it was worth it," Hotz told the Bergen County Record speaking of the time spent hacking the phone.
Hotz wrote in his blog that he had originally hoped to sell the second phone on eBay, but said eBay refused to cooperate with the sale. Hotz wrote in his blog that he had wanted to use the proceeds from the sale to buy a car.
