GILLETTE, Wyo., Aug. 21 (UPI) -- A Minnesota man traveled to Wyoming by mule to look for work.

Rod Maday of Boy River, Minn., told the Gillette News-Record that the trip took him 45 days. He started out with two mules, but one got hit by a car and had to be put down.

“I’ve done about 1,500 miles and I’ve got the saddle sores to prove it,” Maday said.

After one night in Gillette, Maday decided to head west again for the Big Horn Mountains, where he hopes to get work on a ranch or working for an outfitter. He wants to find a job somewhere he can keep Henry, the mule that got him to Wyoming.

“He’s my best friend, and I’m not getting rid of him for nothing,” he said.

Gillette turned out to be a disappointment. He rode into town late Thursday with the dust of the road on his clothes and his cowboy hat to find teenagers making fun of him.

Maday hunted raccoons on mule back when he was younger. When he decided to head west with no money and no driver’s license, mule seemed like the logical way to travel.
