POTTSTOWN, Pa., Aug. 16 (UPI) -- Police in Pottstown, Pa., said a suspicious package found in a mail collection box was a container of cremated human remains.

The package, roughly the size of a thick book and wrapped in a green trash bag, was found without an address by a postal worker who phoned the police to come inspect the mysterious object, the Philadelphia Inquirer reported Thursday.

The ashes were revealed after a bomb sniffing dog verified that the contents of the package were not dangerous. Police said the remains were inside a mahogany brown hard-plastic box and included a golden metal plate that had been engraved with "1953-2000" and a name.

"This is a first time for me," said police Capt. F. Richard Drumheller, a 17-year veteran of law enforcement. "I've handled suspicious package reports before, plenty of them. But this is the first time it was anybody's cremated remains."

Drumheller said detectives are working to identify the remains using the printed name, which was not released.
