LOS ANGELES, Aug. 5 (UPI) -- The Los Angeles City Council is considering a program that would hire parolees to train abandoned pit bull dogs.

Under the program, a non-profit group would hire prisoners newly released on parole to work at an academy to socialize pit bulls, the Los Angeles Times reported Sunday.

Many pit bulls end up in animal shelters because their owners have abandoned the dogs, which can be dangerous and aggressive.

The parolee program would give the former prisoners job skills, and produce better-trained pit bulls that have a greater chance of finding permanent homes, said Ed Boks, general manager of Los Angeles Animal Services.

Approval of the Pit Bull Training Academy has been delayed while the program's safety and liability concerns are addressed, but city officials say it should receive final approval in a few weeks.
