Family stands behind alleged mooner

PALM BEACH, Fla., July 28 (UPI) -- Nine weeks is too long for a 13-year-old Florida boy to be suspended from school for exposing his bare buttocks on school grounds, the boy's family said.

Andrew Hornick's parents and step-mother told The Palm Beach (Fla.) Post the 170-pound boy's oversized gym shorts dropped while he was playing basketball, but teachers insist Andrew deliberately pulled down his pants during the last week of school in May.

Whatever the cause, Andrew will miss the first nine weeks of his freshman year at Martin County High School, in keeping with the school district's disciplinary code regarding "indecent exposure."

Hornick's family called the penalty "absurd."

Martin County school officials declined to discuss the specifics of the case with the Post, citing student confidentiality.

However, Assistant Superintendent Hank Salzler said nine-week suspensions are standard for students caught pulling down their pants -- or those of a classmate -- "distasteful" acts that are becoming increasingly common at county schools.

The family has retained an attorney, who is researching whether there is any legal recourse.
