NEW YORK, July 27 (UPI) -- A reputed New York gangster nicknamed "Vinny Gorgeous" asked a federal judge to guarantee that he gets clean suits and regular haircuts in prison.

Vincent Basciano -- who is being tried in federal court in Brooklyn -- has been in solitary confinement since the discovery of what prosecutors say is a hit list of names, including that of U.S. District Judge Nicholas Garaufis.

Basciano, who says the list was simply part of a Santeria ritual, turned to Garaufis for help with his complaints about confinement, Newsday reported.

"I know the government wants me to suffer," he said. "I'll handle that, Judge. But by me having my suits, getting my lawyers' cell phone numbers approved, and having my haircuts every two weeks isn't going to make me feel like I'm in Disney World!"

Lawyers began closing arguments this week in Basciano's trial. Prosecutors say he killed a Bronx neighbor and was at one point acting boss of the Bonanno crime family.
