Cross-country drive on 2 gallons of gas
HOUSTON, July 20 (UPI) -- A Texas billionaire who admits shooting a moose from a helicopter during a Russian hunting trip could face charges in the United States.
Dan Duncan, founder of Enterprise Products Partners, a pipeline company, testified Wednesday before a grand jury in Houston about his 2002 trip to Siberia, the Houston Chronicle reported.
Rusty Hardin, Duncan's lawyer, said that his client might be prosecuted under a federal law banning the import of rare species. Duncan shot a moose, gave the meat away to Russian charities and brought the head home for mounting.
"What the hell is the U.S. interest in bringing felony charges here for hunting on Russian soil, where not one single person has complained?" Hardin said. "Is this really the best use of our prosecutorial resources?"
Duncan said his Russian guide had no objection to his taking the shot, saying that hunters are dependent on local guides to know the law.
