BEN LOMOND, Calif., July 20 (UPI) -- Animal services workers in Ben Lomond, Calif., found 83 cats, three dogs and two iguanas living in the home of an animal hoarder.

Santa Cruz County Animal Services Authority supervising field ranger Todd Stosuy said the 88 animals -- thought to be one of the largest amount of animals found in a single home -- were discovered Tuesday after sheriff's deputies received a call asking them to check on the welfare of pets in the home, the San Jose (Calif.) Mercury News reported Friday.

"Imagine 83 cats living in a house with no litter boxes for two years and you get the general idea," Stosuy said.

Animal Services officials said animal feces were piled as deep as 4 feet in some areas of the house. However, officials said the animals, which were taken to a shelter, were mostly healthy and well-fed, the newspaper said. Stosuy said the woman told him all of the cats were spayed or neutered.

"She was very well-intentioned. These cats are not in poor, poor condition," Stosuy told the Mercury News.
