ROCKLEDGE, Fla., July 18 (UPI) -- Cities in Brevard County, Fla., are converting unused shuffleboard courts into skateboard parks for the younger generation.

Rockledge will become the fourth city in Brevard County to convert its shuffleboard courts after an $80,000 skateboard park opens later this summer, Florida Today reported Wednesday.

Once considered a sport for few, skateboarding has gained mainstream recognition in recent years as ESPN's X Games and other "action sports" events grow in popularity, Rockledge officials told Florida Today.

In response, an increasing number of communities are converting unused space or building skate spots in municipal parks in Florida.
