ANCHORAGE, Alaska, July 17 (UPI) -- Police in Anchorage, Alaska, believe a brawl outside a Papa John's pizza restaurant was sparked by a misunderstanding involving sign language.

Officers said Raymond Keith McWain noticed a truck traveling alongside his car with three men inside. One of the men, who is deaf and mute, was communicating to the other two using American Sign Language and a written police statement said McWain mistook the gestures as a sign of disrespect aimed at him, the Anchorage Daily News reported Tuesday.

The police statement said McWain honked his horn and cut off the truck before turning into the parking lot of the restaurant, and the truck followed.

McWain's cousin, Daniel Harris, who works at Papa John's, exited the pizza store and attacked the deaf man while the two other men beat McWain. Police said multiple shots were fired from at least one gun, but no one was reported shot.

Harris was the only participant arrested when police allegedly found several plastic baggies of methamphetamine, a glass pipe and $4,691 in his pockets. His bail was set at $15,000.
