ARIPEKA, Fla., July 16 (UPI) -- Residents of Aripeka, Fla., are complaining after a couple demolished a historic home to build a 20,000-square-foot house.

Local artist Arline Erdrich, who described the house in construction as "grotesque to the ultimate," and other residents claimed Peter and Nicole Napolitano erred when they demolished the historic home and cut down multiple trees to make way for the new house, the St. Petersburg (Fla.) Times reported Monday.

Virginia Jackson, of the Hernando Historical Museum Association, agreed that the demolition of the house was a loss for the community.

"I just can't believe anyone would tear down such a beautiful house," she told the Times.

However, Patricia Posey, who sold the property for $1.1 million in 2004, said to the newspaper that many of the same neighbors who are complaining blocked her plan to use the property and its guest houses as an assisted-living facility.

"They should have been standing elbow-to-elbow with me to get that assisted-living facility off the ground," she told the Times.

"Now they want to whine and cry that the house is gone. I say, 'Shut your mouth.'"
