NEW YORK, July 10 (UPI) -- The American Kennel Club, headquartered in New York, says it has no objection to the latest canine craze -- dog dancing.

While not an official AKC-sanctioned event, dog dancing -- aka canine freestyle -- has appeared on the schedules of many dog shows and is popular among several of the organization's 600 member clubs, the San Antonio Express-News reported Tuesday.

"Dog dancing provides another chance for owners to bond with their pets," said AKC spokeswoman Daisy Okas, "and the way we see it, anything that promotes bonding is a positive thing."

The dancing events involve about 40 steps choreographed in an order chosen by the pet's trainer. The rules of the event were created by the Musical Dog Sport Association, a canine-freestyle group based in Houston.

Jacque Bommer, a member of the San Antonio Dog Training Club who teaches a weekly canine choreography class, said any breed of dog can excel at dancing.

"Enjoying this sport is what counts here," Bommer said. "I want everyone in my class to participate and have a good time."
