LONDON, July 7 (UPI) -- British adventurer David Hempleman-Adams has set a new record for crossing the Atlantic in the smallest gas balloon ever to make the risky trip.

Hempleman-Adams settled to earth in a cow pasture in France's Burgundy region Friday to complete a four-day flight that began in Newfoundland.

The Telegraph reported Saturday that the welcoming committee included Hempleman-Adams' ground crew, a bottle of warm Champagne and about nine local cows who appeared only modestly interested in the goings on.

The balloon had to fly deep into France to the area around Nolay before landing due to weather.

Balloons have crossed the Atlantic before; however this trip was carried out in a rig far smaller than the huge balloons generally used for the flight. The Telegraph described the basket Hempleman-Adams stood in for four days as being small and light enough to be lifted with one hand.
