LOCKPORT, Ill., July 3 (UPI) -- A suburban Chicago family says a 3-inch scorpion stowed away inside a box that held a patio set purchased from Menards.

The family said when the table and four chairs were taken out of the box Monday, the family cat discovered the box was not yet empty, the Chicago Daily Southtown reported Tuesday.

"The cat was going crazy in the box," Susan Brown of Lockport said. "Our 6- to 8-pound cat was backing out with this scorpion following it. The way he was swinging his tail around, he wanted to make a meal out of the cat."

"If we had been a family with young kids, the kids would have run back and forth in the box," she said. "It could easily have been one of us at the hospital with a bite."

Susan Brown captured the eight-legged arthropod in a jar and donated it to the Illinois State Museum.

"We empathize with the guest but unfortunately have no way of knowing the origin of the scorpion," said a statement from Menards corporate headquarters. "We reported the incident to the manufacturer and they're looking into it."
