ZENTSUJI, Japan, July 1 (UPI) -- Farmers in Japan are growing square-shaped watermelons, a popular specialty unique to the city of Zentsuji in western Japan.

The watermelons, which are grown in plastic containers to make them square-shaped, are much more expensive than round watermelons, the Mainichi Shimbun reported.

Square-shaped watermelons are known for being less sweet than round watermelons and are sometimes used for decoration. About 800 of the melons are expected to be sent across Japan in the next two weeks, the Shimbun said.

The melons were reportedly pioneered by an 84-year-old farmer about 30 years ago.
