TEHRAN, June 2 (UPI) -- Iran's interior minister is encouraging "temporary marriages" to allow couples to have sex, but some call the practice a cover for prostitution.
Shia Islam allows a couple to marry for a fixed period of time, ranging from an hour to a century, without involving a cleric, the BBC reported Saturday. The practice is being portrayed by some in Iranian society as being nothing more than a means for couples to avoid being arrested by the moral police if they are having sex or staying in the same hotel room while traveling.
Iranian Interior Minister Mostafa Pour-Mohammadi, however, suggests this temporary marriage is a solution to the country's social problems. Iran first started promoting temporary marriage as an alternative to living in sin 15 years ago.
