Artist eats corgi on the radio

LONDON, May 30 (UPI) -- A British performance artist claimed to have eaten a meal created from the meat of a deceased corgi dog to protest the Royal Family's treatment of animals.

Mark McGowan, who shared some of his corgi dinner with fellow guest Yoko Ono on London radio station Resonance FM, said the stunt was a protest against alleged mistreatment of a fox during a January hunt led by Prince Phillip, the BBC reported Wednesday.

The Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals said the fox did not suffer.

McGowan, a vegetarian, said he wanted to raise awareness about "the RSPCA's inability to prosecute Prince Philip and his friends."

"We love our animals in Britain," he said. "Why is it then that we then allow people -- especially people who are supposed to be ambassadors for this country -- to treat animals with such disrespect?"

Corgis are a favorite dog breed of the queen, who allows the canines free run of Buckingham Palace.
