BUFFALO, N.Y., May 13 (UPI) -- A baby born in Rochester, N.Y., went directly into diapers meant for 3- to-6-month-olds on his first day -- because he weighed 14 pounds, 5 ounces.

"When they said how much he weighed I started bawling my eyes out in the operating room ... it was just so surprising," said Tammy Dougherty after giving birth to her new son, Evan James.

He was born May 8, 10 days before he was due. If he had held on until his due date, he might have weighed more than 15 pounds, said Dr. August Bruno, who delivered him.

Tammy Dougherty said the baby was so large she had difficulty walking and even breathing in the last month of her pregnancy, WGRZ-TV in Buffalo, N.Y., reported Sunday.

Evan is the biggest baby ever born at Rochester's Mercy Hospital -- and may be the biggest baby ever born at a hospital owned by the Catholic Health System, hospital officials said.
