A customer of the bone and mannequin parts seller called police Tuesday night to report the man was selling skulls, the Chicago Sun-Times reported.

When the police arrived at Sloan's apartment, they found four human skulls, but by Wednesday had determined owning the skulls was legal.

"There's a market -- a legal market -- for bones, and I import and sell bones for medical research" on eBay, Sloan said.

The skulls, which were about 70 to 80 years old, were initially confiscated until it was deemed there was nothing illegal about owning them, Lt. Mark Hawkins said.

The Chicago police learned the skulls had been purchased overseas and detectives turned the case over to U.S. Customs agents to make sure they came into the country legally.
