BOSTON, May 2 (UPI) -- A wallet lost more than 50 years ago during a mugging in Boston recently found its way home, only to find it had survived its former owner.

The Lewiston (Maine) Sun Journal reported Wednesday that Val Gregoire lost his wallet in a mugging way back in 1951 and it wasn't until 56 years later that his widow regained the item from a Boston demolition worker.

Apparently the worker found the wallet inside a wall at Boston's Paramount Theatre on April 11 and promptly attempted to return the aged item to its rightful owner.

But Gregoire passed away back in 2003 and instead the wallet found its way to his widow, who expressed shock that it was found after so many years.

Gregoire's widow said that when she opened the wallet and found her late husband's birth certificate and a 1951 "Armed Forces Liberty Pass," she was dumbfounded.

"The date was what freaked me out," she told the Sun Journal. "Maybe it was meant to be found."
