Runner has more mileage than his car

OAKLAND, Calif., May 2 (UPI) -- A 55-year-old Oakland, Calif., runner has completed running 100,000 miles, which he says is more than any of his cars have ever achieved.

"I've out-mileaged at least two of my cars," real estate attorney Joe Schieffer told the Oakland Tribune. "It's because I run so much and hardly ever drive, so any car I own usually dies of old age before it can reach as many miles as I do."

Schieffer said he has kept meticulous notes on his distances in local training and in 51 marathons and 95 ultra marathons since 1978, averaging nearly 70 miles per week.

"A marathon doesn't just mean a race," Schieffer said. "It's a specific distance of 26 miles and 385 yards. Anything over that is an ultra marathon."

The report said his distance is roughly equivalent to running around the Earth four times at the equator.

Schieffer said he doesn't listen to music while he's running, and just concentrates on getting where he's going, which consumes an average of five pairs of Nikes a year, the report said.
