WASHINGTON, May 1 (UPI) -- U.S. Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers had hoped to miss just a few votes after giving birth but Cole McMorris Rodgers couldn't wait until the Memorial Day recess.

McMorris Rodgers, R-Wash., gave birth to Cole at 3:14 a.m. Sunday at Bethesda Naval Hospital in Maryland, four weeks earlier than expected, The Hill reported.

McMorris Rodgers said in a statement that she and her husband, Brian Rodgers, are "overjoyed."

"Although he arrived early, both the baby and I are doing well and recovering at the hospital. We look forward to soon being able to bring our son home," she said in The Hill report.

McMorris Rodgers' chief of staff, Connie Correll, delivered a baby boy last week, The Hill reported.
